What Is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance in all your body's cells. Your body needs cholesterol to make hormones, vitamin D, and substances that help you digest foods. Your body makes all the cholesterol it needs. If you have too much cholesterol in your blood, it can combine with other substances in the blood to form plaque.  This plaque buildup can narrow coronary disease and even block vital blood flow.

What Causes High Cholesterol? â€‹

  • Unhealthy eating habits, such as eating lots of bad fats.

  • Lack of physical activity with lots of sitting and little exercise.

  • Smoking, which lowers HDL cholesterol, especially in women.

Am I at Risk?

A variety of factors can determine your risk for high cholesterol

  • Heredity - cholesterol problems can run in families

  • Age - cholesterol levels tend to rise as you get older

  • Weight - being overweight or having obesity raises your risk

Race is also a determining factor. African Americans typically have higher levels of risk

How Enlightened Medical Care Can Help

Lifestyle changes such as exercising and eating a healthy diet are the first defense against high cholesterol. But, if you've made these important lifestyle changes and your cholesterol levels remain high, we might recommend medication. The choice of or combination of medications depends on various factors, including your personal risk factors, age, health,  and possible drug side effects.
